Isn’t it?! It seems there’s various different projects working on this around the North Sea, so things look promising. Not sure if there are also similar plans for the Irish Sea…
Another fascinating article, Hannah. So many wonderful links, planting new oyster beds in a shipwreck off Ostend, a meal in Charles Dicken's Pickwick Papers, the Whitstable Oyster festival with imported stock and a wonderful, historical map of previous oyster beds. Thank you.
Corrosion-protection systems on offshore wind turbines discharge metals in surrounding water, accumulating in kelp and the tissues of oysters and mussels and consequently those higher in the food chain. Unless measures have been taken to prevent this from happening, I would not eat anything grown inside offshore wind farms. See this recent study by Watson et al. https://doi.org/10.1038/s44183-024-00101-6
Establishing oyster beds under windfarms is such a fantastic idea.

Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for reading!
Great news for oysters. I cannot understand why anyone would want to eat them, though! :D
Ha! Yes, each to their own! :)

Thanks for this, and for the reference, Lonneke. I wasn't aware of this research. An important nuance in this discussion!
I would love this to thrive! Not just because biodiversity is so crucial, but because... I do love an oyster. Mmm.
Indeed! It’s a win-win!
